Bell Strings (2026)

In its original form, the bell string

—or bell pull—

was used by the wealthy

to summon servants

by pulling a beautifully decorated textile strip

with a bell at the end.

Later, the bell disappeared,

and the bell string

became a purely decorative object

that gradually faded from upper-class homes

and was adopted by

other social classes.

In this series of works

I am interested in how we might

listen through the bell string

How we might listen to the hidden labor

we would rather not see.

Could we make this labor appear

by summoning matters

within our proximity

that are (paradoxically)

often invisible to us,

but which nevertheless

are an intrinsic part of our lives?
